How barometric pressure affects fishing

Barometric pressure is the weight of the atmosphere, measured in hectopascals (hPa). At sea level it usually sits between about 980 and 1050 hPa, with 1013 hPa as the standard. Anglers watch the trend rather than the number: a falling barometer ahead of a front is widely associated with feeding activity, and a high, steady one after a front with slow fishing.

What the reading actually is

Barometric pressure is the weight of the air above you. It is reported in hectopascals (hPa), which are numerically identical to the older millibars, so 1015 hPa and 1015 mb are the same thing.

Standard pressure at sea level is 1013.25 hPa. Day to day you will see roughly 980 to 1050 hPa. That is a narrow band, which is exactly why the absolute number matters less than which way it is going.

Why anglers watch it

Pressure is a proxy for weather that has not arrived yet. A falling barometer means a low-pressure system is approaching, usually bringing cloud, wind and rain. A rising one means high pressure is settling in — clear skies, light winds, bright light.

The long-standing observation among anglers is that fish feed hard in the hours before a front, while the barometer is dropping, and go quiet for a day or two after it passes and pressure climbs into a bluebird high.

An honest word on the mechanism

The correlation is reported so consistently, across so many fisheries, that it is hard to dismiss. The explanation is less settled.

The common account is that pressure changes act on a fish's swim bladder, making it uncomfortable and prompting it to adjust depth or feed ahead of the change. It is plausible, but the pressure change from a passing weather system is small compared with the change a fish experiences moving a metre or two up or down in the water column.

A more likely story is that pressure is standing in for everything that travels with it: light, cloud cover, wind, surface chop, and the drop in water temperature after a front. Fish may be responding to those directly, with the barometer simply the earliest number that sees them coming.

Either way it earns its place on a catch record. Whether it is the cause or the messenger, it is a good predictor.

How to actually use it

Watch the trend, not the value. A single reading tells you almost nothing. The change over the previous six to twelve hours tells you plenty.

Fish the front, not the aftermath. If a system is due tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow morning is often the session to take off work for.

Adjust after a front rather than giving up. Post-frontal fish tend to sit tighter to structure and deeper. Slower presentations and more precise casting recover a lot of a difficult day.

Check it against your own record. This is the part general advice cannot do for you. Fisheries differ, species differ, and the only pressure band that matters is the one your fish keep turning up in.
