Tide stages, and why moving water beats slack

Tide stage describes where the water is in its cycle: flooding as it rises, ebbing as it falls, and slack at the turn. Most coasts get two highs and two lows a day, roughly six hours apart. Moving water concentrates bait against structure, which is why the middle of a flood or ebb usually fishes better than slack.

Ask a hundred anglers to name the one thing that decides a saltwater session and most will say the tide. When people start logging catches properly, tide stage is almost always the first pattern that falls out of the data.

Why moving water fishes better

Current does the work of gathering food. It sweeps baitfish, crustaceans and everything else off the shallows and funnels them through channels, around points and over bars.

Predators know this. Rather than hunting the whole estuary, they hold in the slack water behind structure and wait for the current to deliver. That is why the productive spots are so often edges — a channel lip, the down-current side of a bar, a bridge piling, the mouth of a creek draining a flat.

At slack water that conveyor stops. The bait disperses, the ambush points stop working, and fish that were feeding hard twenty minutes earlier can go completely quiet.

Timing

Most coasts are semidiurnal: two highs and two lows a day, with about 6 hours and 12 minutes between a high and the following low. Because the lunar day runs about 50 minutes longer than the solar one, the whole pattern slides later by roughly that much each day.

That is the practical reason a mark that fired at 7am on Saturday is worth fishing nearer 8am on Sunday. You are not chasing the clock, you are chasing the stage.

Spring and neap tides

The moon sets how big the movement is. Around the new and full moon, the sun and moon pull in line and produce spring tides — the largest range and the strongest currents. Around the quarter moons they work against each other and produce neap tides, with a smaller range and gentler flow.

Bigger is not automatically better. Spring tides move a lot of water and can dirty it up or make a mark unfishable; neaps can leave too little current to switch a spot on at all. Many marks have a range they want, and finding it is exactly the kind of thing a logbook settles.

How to use it

Fish the middle, not the turn. The strongest flow is usually around the middle two hours of a flood or ebb.

Match the mark to the stage. A creek mouth that only drains on a falling tide is a different spot from a flat that only floods on a rising one. Very few marks work on both.

Record the stage, not just the time. "11:30 AM" tells you nothing next season. "Two hours into the ebb, spring tide" tells you when to go back.

Watch the wind against the tide. Wind blowing against the current stands the water up and can turn a workable mark into a mess, or push bait into a corner and make it.
